Up until 1870, all of Glacier Bay was frozen behind a mile-wide wall of ice. Naturalist John Muir was the first white man to enter the bay in 1879, and what he found there has continued to fascinate and amaze visitors cruising through Glacier Bay's 3.3 million acres. Glacier Bay was designated a national park in 1925, and when your cruise ship enters the bay, a park ranger comes aboard who will provide a running commentary throughout the day over the ship's loudspeakers about the wildlife, glaciers and history of Glacier Bay. If you are lucky, you may catch sight of humpback whales, bears, seals and mountain sheep.
