Haines, Alaska Cruise Port of Call

Haines is a beautiful coastal stop for many Alaskan cruises, and if your cruise ship stops here, you are sure to enjoy the scenery and charm of this picturesque seaside town. There is plenty to see and do here to enjoy your stay here in Haines, Alaska. If your cruise ship stops at Skagway instead of Haines and you would prefer to spend your day at Haines, you can take a high speed catamaran which will travel from Skagway to Haines in about 35 minutes.  

Cruise ships and catamarans dock in front of Fort Seward, which was the only military base in the whole territory for years. It is now a National Historic Landmark. The Chilkat Indian Dancers perform at the tribal house on the Fort Seward parade grounds, with their elaborate costumes and carved masks. The former fort hospital now houses the Alaska Indian Arts, where you can often observe native Tlingits carving totem poles, weavers making blankets and metal smiths working with silver.


   

Just a half mile away by foot, taxi or shuttle bus is downtown Haines. Haines is located in the "Valley of the Eagles", and the American Bald Eagle Foundation has exhibits, videos and a gift shop dedicated to our national bird. You can also sign up for a relaxing float trip through the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve to observe these magnificent birds and view the beautiful scenery. There are also hikes and bicycle tours available for the more adventurous visitors who want to get closer to the natural beauty and wildlife of the area. For a quieter afternoon, check out the Haines Public Library, which was named the Best Small Library in the United States.

If your taste runs more to the unusual, check out the "Hammer Museum", which is the only museum in the world dedicated to - hammers. Also, nearby Dalton City was created for the movie "White Fang", and is now the Haines Brewing Company and Klondike Saloon. Haines is a charming stop on your Alaskan adventure, and one which is sure to be a highlight of your trip.
